What is Copyediting?

That’s a good question; there are many definitions. Here's mine:

It’s a service for writers to "deep clean" and improve your content – its correctness, clarity, conciseness, and consistency – while not interfering with what you want to say and how you want to say it.

The objective being to make your content as polished, readable, understandable, and effective as possible.

My copyediting deep cleaning includes black-and- white proofreading to fix typos and errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, word usage, capitalization, hyphenation, sentence structure, and syntax.

Then there are the more subjective style points your content needs. My copyediting won’t rewrite your content, but I will suggest tweaks such as:

-Knocking out unnecessary and “pet” words (or even full sentences) to make your content more concise.

-Adding a word here or there to make a sentence more readable

-Rearranging words (or sentences in a paragraph) to make your content clearer and more understandable.

-Indicating where you are being overly duplicative for a point you want to make

-Noting inconsistencies in how you refer to people, places, things, etc.
